Recently a friend of mine introduced me to Google+.

First of all I was like “another Social networking site”. Do I really need this? So in the beginning I was a little sceptical if Google+ is really necessary or not.

On the first view the place looks very simple, I would even say “minimalistic”. The handling of the site is also simple, easy to understand, even for beginners.

I have to say that Google is doing a lot right here. Google+ feels like a mixture between Facebook, Tumblr and “art-communities” like DeviantArt or Flickr. But Google+ takes the best out of this three. Posting your own works is easier, the picture viewer looks better than on Facebook. Sharing work is more personal than on Tumblr and Google+ does not bother you with advertising or premium accounts like some of the big “art-communities” do.

Google also offers a crispy (iphone, android) app for Google+ that lets your manage your account and browse other peoples posts easily.

So is Google+ an alternative to Facebook? In my opinion it is the better place if you are:

1.an artist

2. an “art-lover”

3. someone who already uses a Tumblr-blog

The new review is about one of the most popular and probably the biggest photo community in the world:

Flickr

I had a Flickr account for a couple of years, but never really used it. I made a new one a couple of days ago to really check this place out and for this review.

What I like about Flickr is the possibility to connect it with many other services like for example with my WordPress-blog. This gives Flickr also a kind of omnipresence on the web and we will soon find out if this is really deserved.

So after I created the account (with my Facebook log in) I uploaded 6 pictures and then wanted to do one of the most important things you do in a community: adding contacts. Flickr offers connections with Facebook, gmail- hotmail and yahoo email-accounts to search your contacts for Flickr-accounts. After Flickr found about 50 contacts of mine with accounts there I started to add this people to my contacts. After a while it did not work anymore. No explanation, no error message , nada. I then tried to add people manually and received and error message that was totally unclear for me. Finally when I tried to “watch someone back” Flickr told me what the story is: new accounts are always suspected to be “spam”. Means, for Flickr every new account and so also potential customer is in the beginning a potential criminal. But they are so nice to give you the possibility to prove that you are not a spammer. I found the paragraph in the facts and it says that every new account is limited in many things until you proved that you are not a spammer. I wrote an email to the Flickr support to find out if there is anything I can do to make this process faster and to show my honesty. I received an e-mail back after an hour with just two links to the facts inside which had absolutely nothing to do with the question I asked them.

Next disappointment came just after that. From the 20 people I was allowed to add to my contacts on the first day only 2 had uploaded a picture within the last 4 months. Means basically all of my contacts were not active on Flickr anymore. I started to look for some groups to add my work there, because many people always told me how awesome the Flickr groups are. Like on dA I found thousands of groups and also like on dA most of them were not active anymore. If the last message from the group admin is from 2008 then you don´t have no questions anymore.

The design:
The design of Flickr is very basic and simple, some might call it even ugly. It has not changed very much over the years.

The art:
mostly Photography, some people also post photographs of their paintings

The community:
everyone WAS on Flickr.

The level:
everything form snapshots to some real good art

Pros and Cons:
P:
- free basic membership is decent

- possibility to post pictures in private folders

C:
- boring design
- no changes over the years
- very low amount of views on your works

- strange policy regarding new accounts

- customer support is not willing to help

My account on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/white-canvas/

Result:
The only reason to Flickr in 2011 is if you want to use one of the many connections other platforms have with Flickr, for example to show your Flickr-stream on your blog.

Except for that Flickr feels like a relict from 2005 and it also looks like one. It always lived from its popularity and the pure amount of users. But most of this users are gone now and Yahoo seems to be unwilling to put any more work into the place. If you want to upload your pictures “only for friends” googles Picasa http://picasa.google.com/mac/ might work much better for you, also Facebook makes Flickr obsolete.

I recently followed a discussion about Red Bubble and one of the guys involved posted a list of about 50 other places where you can sell art on the internet. So some people might say now: woah this is so cool, so many places, what a diversity.

No, actually this is not cool. Not cool at all. I checked all this places and about 7 or 8 were already down. (Domain for sale, server not reachable etc). Some other places seem not be updated in the last couple of years. And here is exactly the problem.

There was a time when everyone thought it might be a goldmine to create a place where people can sell and buy artworks online. But it is not. It is a pretty tough game. Especially when you have the costs for the servers etc. There are not that many people interested in spending money for art and not all of them like to do it on the internet. Also there is not an unlimited amount of great artists out there.

So now we have the situation that we have hundreds of this places on the net and without the right knowledge you probably end up on the wrong one. As a buyer or as an artist. Especially as an artist it can be really a problem. You want to have you work everywhere? Cool. But do you also want to spend a couple of hours of your precious time to upload your works on a website that has basically not been visited by any potential buyers in months?

Wasting time on the net is easy. Don´t waste your time with this stuff.

Here is a list of some places that are still busy and alive:

http://imagekind.com

http://www.zazzle.com

Are you?
Are you all consumed by what you do?
Are you awake at all hours considering how it should be done?
Do you see things from the corner of your eye and wonder how to show it to the rest of the world?
Does your curiosity for all things run away with you?
Do you see glory in the mundane?
Do you see beauty in the ugly?
Do you compose your world around you, see it as if through a view finder, on paper with graphite, on canvas with oils, on graphics with a mouse, do have wonder running through your veins and questions always on your mind?

Being an artist is more than having the ability to draw, to paint, to be able to use a camera; being an artist is what makes you, it runs through your whole being and like a ticking clock it counts along with your heartbeat, tick, tock, it’s inside you and no matter what you cannot contain it and you will show all what you are and that essence of creativity will be released again and again, you will become blind to what the world thinks of your art, you will only become aware of what you feel, how it makes you rejoice in all that you are and all that you see. Only this will stop your work being sterile, only by giving a little of your life to your work will your work ever truly live.

You are unique, just like the art you produce you will always be different from the normal, you took that decision the day you picked up a camera, the day you picked up a brush, the day you wrote prose, be proud of what you are, you are an artist, you are art, when you feel it within your soul, when you can’t get the paint out from the creases in your fingertips, when you carry your camera everywhere, when you can’t leave the house without paper and pencils and a story is always unfolding in your mind no matter what you are doing, can you then say you are an artist.

After I reviewed the biggest alternatives to dA, named Shadowness, ArtLimited and Red Bubble I want to present you guys now some smaller places that some of you might find interesting enough to create an account there.

Today I will start with Fotoblur. http://www.fotoblur.com/

I joined Fotoblur in 2010 to block my name: chinastone and in case I might want to use it in the future.

I only posted one picture there, because I was not really convinced by the place. Two weeks ago I came back to Shadowness and Fotoblur to give both places a second try. I started to post some works on both places and was waiting for something to happen.

While I felt directly “home” at Shadowness I felt kind of lost at Fotoblur. The place feels like the little brother of ArtLimited but is as far not as welcoming as AL.

The design:

Fotoblur has a white design. But compared to ArtLimited and RedBubble it lacks a feeling of elegance. It is simple, it does not distract you from the art, but I would not call it beautiful.

The art:
only Photography

The community:
People in their 30-50`s.

The level:
Fotoblur is for the advanced amateur. The level is decent, but compared to ArtLimited a little lower.

Pros and Cons:
P:
- the community belongs to a magazine, that will maybe feature some of your works
- the free account is decent

C:
- the page looks not very catchy
- the comments are not very constructive

- the views on your works are low

- My account on Fotoblur: http://www.fotoblur.com/people/chinastone

Result:
Check it out if you have reached your 40 pictures-free account limit on ArtLimited and you don´t want to pay there for a premium account or if you like to show your works “everywhere”. Create an account if you are really motivated to work yourself into this community and if you main aim is to be featured in the Fotoblur-mag.

Otherwise stay away from this place.

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 8, 2011, 11:23 PM

I want to present you today another community that some people may
consider an alternative or even replacement to dA: Red Bubble

Red Bubble was founded in 2007. I joined the website two years later in 2009
and started to post some pictures on my brandnew account.
I like my RedBubble account very much. The design of the place is great, the navigation easy,
the staff seems to be very friendly, the portfolio looks professional and the site gives you the
opportunity to sell your work for some fair prices.
So far so good.
But RedBubble also has some negative sites. I have basically no interaction with other people on
RedBubble, even so I have them on my watchlist. Red Bubble wants to be different than dA and it is
different, maybe a bit too different. I suggest this place to every advanced amateur/semi-pro
who is looking for a professional and clean looking place to show his work to others and
maybe even sell some prints here and there. But if you are a community-addict, someone who
likes to browse around all day long looking for interesting people and works. Who wants to interact
with others, download some works here and there, wants to have fun and hanging around with friends,
than RedBubble is not the place you want to spend all your free time.
It can still be a good place for you to host your portfolio, but you will hardly ever spend some time there…

The design:
RedBubble has an elegant white design with a little bit red here and there. The portfolio is white or black.

The art:
Photography, Drawings etc

The community:
Most people are older than 30.

The level:
RedBubble is for the advanced amateur/semi-pro.

Pros and Cons:
P:
- beautiful design
- possibility to sell your art
- the membership is free

C:
- no real community
- the works look a bit too sharp on the website
- low amount of views on your works

My account on RedBubble:
http://www.redbubble.com/people/chinastone

Result:
Join RedBubble if you have enough of busy communites or if you look for an addition to your normal account on dA or Shadowness. http://shadowness.com/ Don´t join it as a replacement to Deviant Art if you just look for another community.

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 6, 2011, 4:35 PM

After my reviews for shadowness and artlimited I want to review today another photography website: 1x.com1x.com was found a couple of years ago by two Swedish guys.
I came over this place in 2009 or 2010, I can´t remember.
I directly created an account and posted my first picture.
1x.com declares they have “the best pictures on the web”, so I posted one of my best.
They have a screening process and my picture my declined. No reason why has been given.
At that time only one picture-submission per week (!) was possible for a free account.
(I don´t know if this has changed but I don´t think so) I tried it three more times with other
pictures and everytime the same story. Declined, no reason been given. Over the months
and years I talked with many photographers (mostly “fine-arts”) about this website and everyone
made more or less the same experience with them.

The design:
1x.com changed recently from black to white. Before it was possible to download all pictures by a simple
click, now they disabled this.

The art:
“The best pictures on the net”? Well, more the pictures the founders and curators liked the most. Not always very objective in my opinion.

The community:
Generally speaking the people seemed to be already a bit older than in most of the other communities I checked.

The level:
The level is high. But too much focus is on high technical quality instead of high artistic quality in my opinion.

Pros and Cons:
P:
- the new white design is nice

- this place might work for you if you the curators like your style

C:
- The free account is very limited. The paid accounts expensive.
- Has a high potential to give you a hard time when your art is not accepted by the curators for whatever reason.

Result:

Give it a try if you want, but be prepared to be disappointed.

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 3, 2011, 2:15 PM

Today I want to present you a very active and well-known community: [link]

Founded by professional photographer Denis Olivier a couple of years ago,
I came over this place shortly after I left dA for the first time in March 2009.
I directly created an account and posted my first couple of pictures.
AL was not very busy and the level was extremely high at this time.
I was lucky to be featured with one of my first submissions, but still it was a hard start for me there.
I worked myself into this place during the rest of 2009 and now I have my biggest, and most
well-known account in this place. I was featured 10 times and my pictures received more then
100.000 views.

The design:
ArtLimited has a very clean and simple design. The site looks very much alike the art it represents,
simple and elegant.

The art:
ArtLimited is mostly a community for photographers. The art is mainly b/w and many of the works can be
called “fine-art”.

The community:
The community gets bigger and bigger. Most people are in their 30`s. People come from all over the world, but the focus is on Europe.

The level:
Also no screening process here. Still the level is far above average. The people know what is good and what is not.

Pros and Cons:
P:
ArtLimited offers a free account with an upload-limit of 40 pics.
The community is very well-mannered. People are very polite and friendly.
The place is highly inspirational.

C:
The premium account is pretty expensive.
The art becomes a bit repetitive after a while.

My account on ArtLimited:
[link]
(Add me if you join the community)

Result:

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 1, 2011, 7:27 PM

In my opinion there is always a good reason not to stick with just one website.

I want to start with a very interesting website: Shadowness

This community is already a couple of years old, but I discovered it not until May 2010.
I directly created an account, but was not so convinced with the design of the site and
it seemed like that it was not very busy.
I remembered this site a couple of days ago and when I checked it out I realized that many
things have changed in the meantime. Coder Meng To and his team gave the site a totally
new look and the community is more active now.

The design:
Shadowness has a very nice design and is a real eye-catcher.
Compared to Shawdowness dA looks like a relict from the 90`s.
If you like it black or colorful then this is your place.

The art:
Shadowness is a place for graphic designers and photographers.

The community:
Shadowness has a small, but very friendly community. Most people seem to be in their 20`s.

The level:
There is no screening process or anything. Still Shadowness is more something for the advanced amateur.

Pros and Cons:
P:
Shadowness offers a very decent free account.
The community is very well-mannered.
The site offers a very interesting system, where you can gain experience through activity.

C:
The community is still not very big, so don´t expect too much feedback on your works.
The page does not offer any possibilities to sell your art yet.

My account on Shadowness:
[link]
